Be a Good House Guest - Holiday Visits With Your Dog

If the upcoming holiday season finds you and your pup visiting family and friends for extended visits its best to be fully prepared to be the best house guests possible. Here are some things you should think about before you pack your bags for an overnight visit.

Where will your dog sleep?

When traveling with your dog it is best to keep things as familiar as possible to alleviate any anxiety for your pup.  If they like to sleep in a bed bring it along, or, if that is not possible bring a special blanket or pillow that will remind them of home.

Pack their favorite food.

While staying overnight as a guest is not the time for your dog to have tummy troubles.  Bring along their regular food and keep their feeding schedule as close to normal as possible.  Have their favorite treats on hand to distract them from the temptation of the variety of holiday foods that your pup may encounter.

Introduce new furry friends gradually

If the home you will be visiting has pets be sure they all get along before giving your dog the run of the house.  Introduce all the furry friends gradually and cautiously as to not spark any jealousy among the group. Be patient and allow them all to greet and get to know each other at their own pace and on their own terms.

Be a responsible guest

Supervise and take responsibility for your dog.  Be aware of your dogs behavior and body language to know when they are feeling stressed or anxious.  Keep their routine as consistent as possible and take them out for regular potty breaks and walks as if they were at home.

With good preparation you and you dog can celebrate the holidays with friends and family. What a nice way to celebrate the season.
