Pet Food Pantry - Long Island Cares

Difficult economic times are taking its toll on animals across the country. When the unemployment rate rises so does the number of shelter animals and abandoned pets.

Companion animals give so much comfort in difficult times.  Those who share their lives with dogs, cats, or other animals they love, are seen to have less stress, lower blood pressure and healthier lifestyles.  To be forced to give up a pet during stressful times is just unimaginable.  No one should have to choose between feeding themselves or feeding their pets.  No animal should be abandoned on the street, or in a shelter, because their family is unable to feed or care for them due to hard economic times.  The thought is just heartbreaking.

Long Island has been hit hard with an almost 8% unemployment rate, high taxes and expensive housing.  But there is help.  Long Island Cares, The Harry Chapin Food Bank, has a pet food pantry to assist those in need.  They stock the pantry with items needed for "those with paws, fins, wings, tails, hoofs, whiskers and others that we call pets". There is something for everyone!  "Founded in 1980 by the late singer, songwriter, and social activist Harry Chapin", Long Island Cares has a vast array of programs (as their slogan says) "Because it takes more than food to feed the hungry".

When I heard of this program I knew I had to do what I could to help fellow Long Islanders and their pets.  As a pet sitter/dog walker I care for all types of pets every day.  These animals bring joy to my life and I can see the joy they bring to their family's lives. With the help of Long Island Cares, and Pet Supplies Plus, I have set plans in motion for a pet food drive to help stock this wonderful pet food pantry.

On Saturday, August 4, 2012, my team of volunteers and I will be collecting pet food donations to donate to the Long Island Cares pet food pantry.

Date: Saturday, August 4, 2012
Time: 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Place: Pet Supplies Plus
           3644 Long Beach Road

The pantry's most needed pet items are: wet/dry dog food, wet/dry cat food, dog & cat treats, collars & leashes, bird seed, fish food, kitty litter, and small dog toys.

Hope to see you there!
